What an old city tour covers

Old city tours in Sultanahmet usually combine the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome square and the Grand Bazaar on foot. Tours differ in length, language, group size and how much time you spend inside each place. The example below is one walking tour, not a market average.

Entry to the mosque is free, so a paid "Blue Mosque ticket" is a guided service and not an entry requirement. See the entrance fee page for details.

Our picks: tours and experiences

Take the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour if you want both buildings with reserved entry, or the one-hour Blue Mosque visit if that mosque is enough. The Sema ceremonies are a quiet evening option, and the private hamam suits a rest day.

For most first-time visitors with one morning, a walk of about 2.5 hours that starts at the German Fountain gives enough orientation. Book a separate ticket for any paid museum you want to enter.

Plan around closures

A tour does not change when the mosque or bazaar is open.

Mosque prayer breaks

Visiting is interrupted from 30 minutes before the call to prayer until 15 minutes after the prayer ends. On Fridays visits start at 14:30. A tour that is offered every day cannot always go inside. See visiting hours.

Season windows

From 1 April to 30 September the mosque is open to visitors 08:30–19:00, from 1 October to 31 March 08:30–17:00. The last entry is 30 minutes before the end.

The Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is open Monday to Saturday, 08:30–19:00. It is closed on Sundays and on religious holidays. Choose a day other than Sunday if the bazaar matters to you. Details on the Grand Bazaar page.

Dress for the mosque

Shoulders and knees must be covered, and women cover their hair. The same applies in the courtyard. See the dress code.

Tours that go beyond the old city

Other sights near Sultanahmet have their own guides.

Combination tours often add the Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace or the Basilica Cistern. These have their own pages: see Hagia Sophia tours for tickets and guided options, and the Basilica Cistern and the Topkapi Palace for the other two. This site keeps to the Blue Mosque, the square and the bazaar.

How tip-based and paid tours differ

Two payment models, both common in the old city.

Tip-based walks

There is no fee in advance. You decide what to pay at the end. The mosque entry itself is free, and the tip is for the guide, not for the mosque.

Paid tours with a fixed price

The price is set when you book, and the page should list what it covers. Compare the length, the group size and whether entry fees to museums are included.

Entry tickets are separate

A tour of the old city does not replace a museum ticket. For large paid sites, the example walking tour shows them from outside only.

Arrive early

Plan to be at the meeting point 10 minutes before the start in the example. Check the time for your own tour in the booking confirmation.

Before you go

  • Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and bring a scarf if you will cover your hair.
  • You take off your shoes before the carpeted hall.
  • Check visiting hours for the day, especially on a Friday.
  • Do not count on a mosque interior during a prayer break.

Choose by what you want to see

Match the tour to your priority.

For most visitors who have only a day or two, the old city walk plus a separate museum ticket is the simplest mix.

Istanbul old city tours: frequently asked questions

Is the Blue Mosque included in an old city tour?

Many tours include a short visit. It depends on the day and the prayer times, because visits stop around each prayer. Ask your tour how it handles a closure.

Do I need a ticket for the Blue Mosque?

No. Entry is free. A paid "Blue Mosque ticket" is a guided service, not an entry fee.

What does a free walking tour cost?

In the example there is no fee in advance. You decide the tip afterwards. Free does not mean no payment is expected.

Are museum tickets included?

In the example, larger paid sites are seen from outside and no museum ticket is needed. Other tours differ, so check what the price covers.

When should I book?

Check live availability for your date. Offers do not show free places on a given day.

Is this an official website?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the mosque, its foundation or any government body.
